Tour could be launching pad for comics' careers

Go see 'em now before they really make it big.

That's the message from comedian Paul Rodriguez about The Crown Royal Latin Kings of Comedy tour, an 11-city show that begins Friday at the Paramount Theatre.

"This is an opportunity for people in Aurora to see some good comics," said Rodriguez, the host and headliner of the show. "They should check them out now because it will be hard to see them all together again, or it will be pretty expensive to see them the next time they come around because they will be so successful."

Rodriguez knows what he is talking about. The first installment of the tour, The Original Latin Kings of Comedy, several years ago included the then little-known comic George Lopez, who has a hit sitcom, The George Lopez Show, on ABC-TV.

"This is the third time we are doing it," said Rodriguez of the Latin Kings of Comedy tour. "Last year a couple of the comics got deals with networks."

In addition to Rodriguez, this year's tour includes comedians Frank Lucero, Manny Maldanado and Dennis Gaxiola.

Plain talk with comedian Paul Rodriguez

Comedy:  The Latin Kings troupe member gives us a stand-up session

[Paul Rodriguez] “Then there’s Frank Lucero.  What I like about this guy is that he talks about middle-aged crises, mariachi music and puts a Caucasian spin on things.”

Rodriguez Reigns Supreme

Rodriguez’s lineup includes not-yet household names, but he ensures fans the performers are better than the previous ones.

“I’ve got a better group now, “Rodgriguez said.  “All of them will be more successful than I am.”

Frank L. Lucero, Dennis Gaxiola and Manny Maldonado are currently sharing the stage with Rodriguez and have been touring together since March 30.  Rodriguez said each man offers a different stand-up routine with jokes about life as a Latino living in the United States.

"Lucky patrons might catch a series of hilarious mariachi impressions by the mustachioed, guitar wielding Lucero, whose metamorphoses from bug-eyed drunk to bored to bad-boy flamenco-style mariachi leave an audience in a tear-inducing laughter jag. When Lucero puts down his guitar and starts to riff about the upcoming tamale season (his pot-smoking friends always roll the tamales wayyyy too tight), he's practically drowned out by the hoots and howls of recognition. This crowd knows tamale season and they let him know they know it."
